Sichuan Reconstruction Trip
Aug
2009

The Ms 8.0 Earthquake in Sichuan on May 12, 2008 made over 70,000 people died, 18,000 missing and over 370,000 injured. I joined the Sichuan reconstruction trip organized by the Faculty of Engineering in August 2009 to help rebuild the after-stricken area. The trip also aimed to promote the use of renewable energy by installing a multi-media classroom powered by solar energy in a local primary school. Witnessing the destruction after the earthquake, I deeply felt the values of life. I learned that we have to cherish the things we have and our families. Although we cannot fully predict or comprehend the environment, we can join force to overcome the difficulties and contribute our parts. The experience is very vital and meaningful for my personal growth.

Study Tour to Japan
Oct
2009

The four-day study tour was short but fruitful. The most exciting part was the visit to the Machine Industry Memorial Foundation (TEPIA), which was established with a mission to enlighten people to and give them an experience of the latest technologies of Japan. At the entrance, we were greeted by the “welcome robot”, PaPeRo, which is programmed to communicate with children in a variety of ways. We then saw several models of advanced electric cars powered by very small lithium-ion battery. The visit made me realize how technology and innovation are being applied in daily lives. After TEPIA, we visited the Yokohama Tire Corporation to learn about the development and production of car. This trip enhanced my understanding on the cutting-edge technology and consolidated my career goal as an engineer to advance people’s life.

11th National Challenge Cup Competition
Oct
2009

The Challenge Cup National Competition of Chinese College Students is a bi-annual academic competition which aims to promote innovation and application of basic research among Chinese students. It is also widely known as the academic and scientific “Olympic Games” for students in China. Throughout the competition, I learned to co-operate, share my thoughts and contribute my ideas. It was a platform for me to make friends, learn the culture and education system of China. I also gained genuine knowledge about science and technology.
