Sustainable Development Project 2009
May
2009

We went to two incineration plants in Pei-Tou (北投) and Bali (八里). The Pei-Tou Refuse Incineration Plant is one of the six-year new national development projects in Taiwan. The plant makes use of the most advanced technology and equipments to reduce refuse volume and generate electricity. The Bali Incineration Plant was designed by a team led by I.M. Pei, an architect of great renown in the world. The plant is covered with aluminum-framed glass-panel and has a 150-meter high funnel. Its attractive appearance makes it into a famous spot for tourists coming to Taiwan.

Another infrastructure that I visited is the Taiwan high speed railway. This railway runs along the west coast of Taiwan from Taipei to Kaohsiung and has a total length of 335.5 kilometers. In the past, passengers could only take coach or plane to travel between the southern and northern part of Taiwan. With the Taiwan High Speed Railway, now it takes 90 minutes only to travel from Taipei to Kaohsiung.

Taking part in this “Sustainable Development Project 2009” gave me a chance to learn about the well-developed infrastructures including incineration plants and high speed railway in Taiwan. I think Hong Kong SAR Government could reference their cases in planning big infrastructural projects.
