Linguistics Field Trip to Denmark
May - Jun
2010

Long had I dreamt to study abroad and stepped outside of the green house where I was brought up with protection and care. I am greatly indebted to the FIFE fund; without it, my dream would have remained just as a dream.

The two-week linguistics field trip provided me with an intensive study opportunity in a renowned university, Aalborg University, in Denmark. I have acquired further knowledge of the linguistic field, such as knowing the non-conventional approach of nexus analysis. Every day after the lectures, I needed to conduct field works and presentations. I learned to collect data and make analysis in a quick yet critical way. This allowed me to probe into the field of research and prepared me for the road of further studies ahead.

Other than academic study, the cultural exchange experience is also worth mentioning. Several local university students in Denmark volunteered to be our buddies to help us better understand and integrate into the local cultures. They toured us around the city and introduced different cultural events and traditions to us, such as the children’s carnival and semester-end celebration at a student bar. The dynamic interactions with the local people were really interesting and amusing.

Without this trip, I would have stayed in my tiny little world, self-praising how competent my English is. It enabled me to study at a prominent university and gave me a chance to better understand different cultures through local interactions. By taking care of myself, I trained to be a more independent person. A big thank to the FIFE Fund for the sponsorship of this trip, which is really a memorable and worth-to-go one.
